A Home Gym

A Home Gym

There is a great luxury to having access to a home gym. In saves you not only on gym membership fees but also on the time traveling to and from the gym. In addition, the added luxury of having the gym in the house means that you can use the equipment anytime.

The challenge with a home workout, however, is two-fold. First, there are the costs involved, as some of the equipment can be very expensive and then there is making sure that you have enough equipment to do a total body workout from home.

So what I will endeavor to do is show you how to set up a home gym that will hit all areas of your body in the most economical manner possible.

The first piece of equipment you will need for your home gym are resistance bands. You can choose to get adjustable weight dumbbells if you like, but being that you can take resistance bands anywhere with you, I think they are far more versatile. And there are plenty of examples of how you can use resistance band exercises to hit every body part:

  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Legs
  • Back
  • Biceps
  • Triceps

Resistance bands also bring an element of safety, especially for someone new to working out, as you can go to failure on any given exercise without having to worry about a spotter. Dropping the rubber tubes will cause no damage to you or the floor…you can’t say that about dumbbells.

Next, for your home gym a chin-up bar. You can pick these up at any retailer. They attach to the door frame and allow you to do chin-ups and pull-ups. Of course, the question becomes what if you can’t do a pull-up?

Simple, you do a negative pull-up. It will work the same muscles as a pull-up and get you to the point where you are doing pull ups on your own. What you do is mount the chin up bar to the door and then instead of pulling yourself up as with a normal pull up, you jump into the position of a completed pull up. Then…SLOWLY…lower yourself down and then repeat the exercise.

Do enough of these and you will be doing pull ups on your own in no time.

Now, with these two pieces of equipment you can economically do just about every strength training exercise at the gym from home. The only thing we have to talk about now is cardio. Now, if you choose to buy an elliptical machine or a treadmill, that’s fine, but I want to give you a few other ideas.

First, start looking at DVD’s at the local library. You will find plenty of instructional videos covering topics such as yoga, step aerobics, cardio kickboxing, Plyometrics and other exercises that you can do from a home gtm. Try a few out from the library and then if you find some that like you can buy them at that point.

The other idea for cardio workouts without the gym is, weather permitting, you can easily get a great cardio routine by biking or power walking right around your home. Do you have a local high school in the area? If you do they have a track you can use when the track team isn’t using it.

The point I am trying to make is not to steer you clear from buying a larger, more expensive piece of equipment if you choose to, but to make the point that having the convenience of a home gym doesn’t require the outlay of a large amount of money.
